Information for Registrars

Situated in the village of Garswood between St.Helens and Wigan, Garswood Surgery has an expanding list size of  c.5,000 patients and operates from a purpose built health centre.

We aim to deliver high quality general practice for our patients.  We aim to give GP registrars a taste of what general practice can be, and demonstrate some of the ways we deliver excellent care.

To do that, we are committed to developing and continually auditing our practice, and we expect registrars to join in that too.

It is our experience that good planning and effective systems for repeat prescribing and so forth can reduce the stress that so often detracts from the enjoyment of medical practice.

We believe in enabling all members of the practice team to develop their careers as far as they wish.  Communication is enhanced by our monthly primary health care team meetings, and daily discussions about the challenges of practice. Health visitors, podiatrists, district nurses, phlebotomists, midwives, pharmacists and mental health workers visit the practice and demonstrate what a community-based team can achieve.

Registrars have weekly tutorials which should enable them to grasp the essentials of general practice. You need to pass summative assessment and we shall try hard to enable you to do this, along with the MRCGP exam.  Tutorials concentrate on clinical problems, with practice management being led by our manager, Edwina Taylor.

Garswood is a friendly village where many people have lived for most of their lives. Social isolation is rare, but significant illness is not.  We will compliment that experience by some sessions at the out-of-hours GP cooperative in St.Helens where a completely different range of problems are encountered.

If you are interested in being our registrar we should like to meet you.

Please email us at garswood.surgery1@nhs.net  to arrange a visit.
